Drunk Driving - Leaving the Scene of an Accident

If you have an accident, it is always best to leave the vehicle at the scene and call the police. The law requires a person, when involved in an accident where there is bodily injury or property damage, to exchange name and insurance information with the other driver.

Failure to do this, may result in you being charged with hit and run/leaving the scene of an accident. Due to the state's interest in seeing that people who are injured or have suffered property damage in an automobile accident are treated fairly, the state takes a very dim view of people leaving the scene of an accident, also called hit and run.

A ticket for hit and run/leaving the scene of an accident results in a twelve point penalty from your driver's license in Missouri, which consequently will cause a years revocation of your license. While there probably is no good excuse for leaving the scene of an accident, many good people get scared and exercise poor judgment.

In almost all cases, an attorney can lessen the impact of the state's wrath by either intervening before the charges are ever brought or by plea negotiation. In most instances, where the exercise of bad judgement can cost you the loss of your driver's license for a year and probable jail time, these severe penalties can be greatly softned.

If you have an accident, exchange your insurance information with the other driver.
